Knowing when to replace
Your printer will usually warn you before ink runs out, showing a low-ink message or fading prints. You can also check ink levels in the printer's software or on the panel to see how much is left. It helps to have the correct replacement on hand before you start, since each model takes a specific cartridge number. Using the right cartridge for your exact HP model, rather than a near match, prevents fit and recognition problems. Replacing a cartridge a little early also avoids being caught mid-job with nothing to print.
Swapping the cartridge
Turn the printer on and open the cartridge access door; on most HP models the carriage slides into reach on its own. Gently press or lift the old cartridge to release it and pull it straight out. Take the new cartridge from its packaging, remove the protective tape from the contacts and nozzles without touching them, and slide it firmly into the matching slot until it clicks. Close the door and let the printer recognize the new cartridge. Handling cartridges by the edges keeps the electrical contacts clean so the printer reads them correctly.
After you replace it
Once the new cartridge is in, the printer often runs a short alignment or asks you to print an alignment page, which keeps text and images sharp. If prints look streaky at first, running a cleaning cycle from the printer's tools usually clears it up after a fresh cartridge. Recycle the old cartridge rather than tossing it. If the printer does not recognize the new cartridge, remove it, wipe the contacts gently, and reseat it. These small steps make sure the replacement delivers clean, full-quality prints right away.
When replacement does not fix it
If a new, correct cartridge still is not recognized, or prints stay faint and streaky after alignment and cleaning, the problem may be a clogged printhead or a fault beyond the cartridge itself. Tankless and high-volume models can also need specific handling. Rather than buying cartridge after cartridge, it is worth having the printer checked.
