An IP address is the printer's location on your network, the way your computer knows where to send each job. When a printer drops offline, shows up twice, or simply cannot be found, the IP address is usually where troubleshooting begins. Knowing it lets you add the printer manually, open its built-in settings page in a browser, and confirm it is really on the network. Finding it on the printer
On an HP printer with a screen, open the wireless or network settings and look for the network summary or details, where the IPv4 address appears as four numbers separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.45. Many models can also print a network configuration or test page from the settings menu, which lists the address clearly. On units without a display, holding the information or wireless button often prints a report with the same details. This is the most direct method and does not depend on any computer or app being set up first.
Finding it from your computer or router
You can also locate the address from the devices around it. On Windows, open printer properties and check the ports or the web services tab, where the address is listed. On a Mac, the printer's details in system settings show the location or address. Another reliable option is logging into your router and viewing the list of connected devices, where your printer appears by name alongside its IP. These methods are handy when the printer has no screen or when you want to confirm the number matches what the printer reports.
Putting the address to work
Once you have the IP address, you can add the printer manually, load its settings page in a browser to check status, or assign it a fixed address so it stops changing and dropping offline.
