Set up on the right network
Most wireless printing problems start at setup. Home routers often broadcast two networks, one on the 2.4 GHz band and one on 5 GHz, and many HP printers only join the 2.4 GHz band. If your HP printer will not connect to WiFi, make sure your phone or computer is on the same network the printer supports while you connect the HP printer to WiFi. Keep the printer within good range of the router, and enter your Wi-Fi password carefully, since a single mistyped character is one of the most common reasons a connection fails to complete.
Keep the connection stable
Once connected, an HP printer can still drop off the network. This usually happens when the router restarts and hands out a new address, or when the Wi-Fi network name or password changes. Placing the printer away from thick walls, large appliances, and other electronics helps maintain a steady signal. If you rename your network or upgrade your router, expect to reconnect the HP printer, just as you would any other device. A brief restart of both the router and the printer often gets an HP printer back online after it has quietly slipped away.
Printing from phones and tablets
Once it is set up correctly, printing from a phone to your HP printer is quick. Apple devices use AirPrint, which works with most modern HP printers as long as the phone and printer share the same Wi-Fi network. Android devices can print through built-in printing services or the HP Smart app. The key requirement is almost always the same network, so if your phone cannot see the printer, check that it is not connected to a guest network or a different band. A quick network check usually solves the mystery.
When wireless just will not cooperate
Sometimes a wireless connection resists every fix, especially in offices with complex networks, multiple access points, or firewalls that block printer traffic. If you have confirmed the network, restarted everything, and updated the HP printer software without luck, the issue may be deeper in your network configuration. We diagnose and resolve stubborn wireless setups onsite, where we can see how your network is actually laid out.
